Centre proposes to set up BRVA for flood management

The Centre has proposed to set up Brahmaputra River Valley Authority (BRVA) in place of the Brahmaputra Board to deal with water management, flood and related issues in the north-east. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told this while speaking to newspersons in Guwahati. Gogoi said that as per proposal, the Union Water Resources Minister would Chair the body and all chief ministers of the north eastern States would be Vice-Chairperson.

Apart from Brahmaputra and its tributaries, the authority would also deal with the Barak and other rivers in the region. It may be recalled 158 people have lost their lives in recent flood and landslide. Flood water also affected over 30 lakh population and submerged thousands of crop land.
