Centre plans ban on laminated multi-layered plastics

The Centre has proposed a ban on non-recyclable laminated multi-layered plastics and metallic pouches used for packing shampoo, gutkha, pan masala and foodstuffs like namkeen and biscuits. According to official sources of Ministry of Forests and Environment, the ministry has invited comments from the stakeholders on the draft rules for the Plastic Rules 2009 which stipulates that no person shall manufacture stock, distribute or sell non-recyclable laminated plastic. The draft rules also stipulate that manufacturing of only those pouches or multi-layered packaging from biodegradable plastic film will be allowed which meet 'Bureau of Indian Standard' specifications. The views from the public and the industry would be considered by the end of December this year.<br/>
