Centre orders probe into alleged ethical violations for usage of cancer vaccines

The Health Ministry has ordered an enquiry to investigate the allegations of ethical violations for usage of a vaccine meant for prevention of some types of cancers.<br/><br/>In response to a call attention motion by Mrs Brinda Karat and others, the Health Minister Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad informed the House that Prima Facie it appears there is no connection between the deaths and the vaccination.<br/><br/>He noted as a matter of precaution and to allay the apprehensions states have been advised not to carry out any vaccination till further orders. He added four deaths have been reported in a population of over 14 thousand vaccinated girls in Andhra Pradesh where the district Medical Officer has given the cause of deaths like suicide, viral fever and drowning.<br/><br/>Mr Azad said that the vaccines in use have been approved in more than 100 countries and were allowed to under go clinical trial in India. The Minister informed the House an international NGO has been granted permission to carry out a study in the areas of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat where these vaccinations took place.<br/><br/>The objective is to demonstrate the suitability of vaccine delivery strategies for treatment of such cancers in the 10 to 14 year adolescent girls. Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad said that Indian Council of Medical research has signed a memorandum of understanding to provide technical support and other relevant information and advice on ethical issues as per the guidelines.
