Seventy five years after formation of the state a colonial pronunciation mistake has been set right. Following Gazette notification of Govt. of India the English spelling of the state hence forth be pronounced ODISHA instead of ORISSA. This spelling will also be used in all official documents. The name of the language also will change from ORIYA to ODIA. Publication of the Gazette notification has gladdened the heart of the general public. Legislators celebrated the news by firing crackers and distributing sweets. Chief minister Naveen Pattanaik has thanked the President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil for signing the ORISSA SPELLING CORRECTION BILL. This process began in 2008 August when a unanimously passed resolution by ODISHA legislative Assembly was sent for central approval. It took forty months to get the spelling right.
