The government today issued an order that Bureau of Indian Standards, BIS certification is mandatory for the manufacture, sale or exhibition of packaged drinking and mineral water.The Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs said in a statement that no person is authorised to manufacture, sell or exhibit such products except under BIS certification mark. As per the quality control order issued under the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Rules, 1955, the BIS has formulated norms for the purpose. According to the order, implementation of the PFA Act is the responsibility of all state governments The BIS also undertakes periodic surveillance, inspection and testing of samples from the market for maintaining the quality of the products of its licensees as per the prescribed Indian standards.
