The UPA Government has resolved to introduce a new housing scheme for the slum dwellers and the urban poor, called Rajiv Awas Yojana. The scheme will extend support to the States and the Union Territories ,willing to assign poverty rights to the people living in the slum areas. This was announced by the Union Minister for Housing and the Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja, at Rangpo in East district of Sikkim on Saturday evening. She was laying the foundation stone of a housing project under the Basic Services for Urban Poor Project of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at this town on the Sikkim – West Bengal border. Kumari Selja told that the Government will make efforts to create a slum -free India in five years through the Rajiv Awas Yojana.
