Centre has expressed its concern over delayed payment of wages to the workers under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Addressing the orientation workshop for eminent citizens for strengthening implementation of the scheme, Union Rural Development Minister Mr C P Joshi said that in most of the states, the workers are getting their payment after a month or so. He observed that these workers are to be paid on daily basis otherwise it will defeat the purpose of the scheme.

The Minister said this will also give rise to corruption. Mr Joshi noted that several states are lagging behind in effectively implementing the centrally funded scheme. He said only 65 lakh households are completing 100 days of employment under the scheme and it is only 54 days otherwise for 10 crore job card holders.

AIR correspondent reports a task force of eminent citizen from various fields has been constituted by the government to visit the areas covered under the scheme and suggest measures for effective implementation of the scheme.

About 2.5 lakh Panchayats across the country are being covered under the scheme. The task force would monitor the process independent and submit their assessment to the centre.
