The government is expecting to exceed the direct tax collection target of 4.30 lakh crore rupees for this fiscal. According to certain estimates, total direct tax collections could be around 4.5 lakh crore rupees .Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman Sudhir Chandra on Tuesday said, it is based on the backdrop of high economic growth of 8.9 per cent recorded during the first half of the current fiscal. Encouraged by the high economic growth, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee recently raised the direct tax collection target by 20,000 crore to 4.5 lakh crore rupees for the current fiscal. Direct taxes mainly include corporate tax, income tax and wealth tax.Meanwhile, Indirect taxes grew by over 42 percent in the first three quarters of this fiscal compared to the last fiscal. According to an official release, over two lakh thirty seven thousand crore rupees were collected as indirect taxes till December. With this 75.7 percent of the Budget estimates for this fiscal have been achieved. Custom collections increased by over 68 percent while central excise collection grew by over 33 percent. Apart from customs and central excise duty indirect taxes also include service tax.
