In a major decision, the Central government has increased its budgetary support share from 50 to 65 percent in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. This has been done to lessen the economic burden on the States. The Abhiyan is on the top of the government's agenda to achieve the objective of Right to Education to all. Six percent of the budgetary support has been earmarked for monitoring the implementation of the programme. A Committee of Vice Chancellors is working out on identifying universities with outstanding performance to give them additional support so as to ensure that they emerge as globally competitive institutions of excellence.
