Centre directs States to enforce Essential Commodities Act to check hoarding of pulses

The Centre has informed that over 5,800 tonnes of pulses have been seized in five states during raids conducted on hoarders. Reviewing the prices, production, procurement and availability of pulses in New Delhi Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha said, action against hoarders and black marketeers has been stepped up. He said, Center had directed state governments to enforce the Essential Commodities Act more stringently and as a result, some state governments have carried out surprised inspections and seized large quantities of pulses. Mr Sinha said, more than 2,500 tonnes of pulses have been seized from Telangana, around 2,300 tonnes from Madhya Pradesh, 600 tonnes from Andhra Pradesh and 360 tonnes from Karnataka.The Centre has taken several steps to control skyrocketing prices, including creating 40,000 tonnes of buffer stocks, improving domestic supply through imports and imposition of stock limits on traders as well as departmental stores, licensed food processors, importers and exports.AIR Jaipur correspondent reports that Rajasthan Government has prescribed limits for traders to stock the pulses.
