Centre clears additional Rs 550 crore for 'Aadhar' scheme

The government on Friday cleared an additional amount of 550 crore rupees for 'Aadhar' scheme .Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after a Cabinet Committee meeting on the Unique Identification Authority of India, UIDAI on Friday that he hopes to complete the exercise of issuing UIDAI 'Aadhar' numbers to the entire population by June 2013.

He said, Aadhar Number would be applicable in the states where UIDAI had completed its exercise and the remaining 16 states and Union Territories where the process was not complete, National Population Register number would be applicable.

Replying to a question, the Home Minister did not rule out little duplication or overlapping considering the huge population in the country. He, however, said most avoidable duplication and costs have been avoided.

This duplication, he said, was alright considering the benefits. He said, every person in India will have a bio-metric and Aadhar number.

AIR correspondent reports, the Planning Commission, in a note on September 30th last year, had said collecting iris data may not be worthwhile given the cost implications and other complexities, except for high-security purposes.
