The Centre has called for active participation of states in the implementation of urban infrastructure development projects. Addressing a workshop in New Delhi on Thursday, the Urban Development Minister, Mr Kamal Nath said there is a need for creating sustainable, equitable and economically vibrant cities across the country. He asked the states to suggest ways to make the Urban Local Bodies economically stronger. He also underlined the need for strengthening the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
The Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister, Kumari Selja, who also addressed the workshop, said urbanisation is a major challenge as it involves capacity building of all sectors.
Mr Saugat Ray, Minister of State for Urban Development said the implementation of JNNURM has a definite impact on citities. He called for more investment in the Mission.
AIR Correspondent reports that the participants at the day-long workshop will discuss a report on Indian Urban Infrastructure and Services, submitted to the government by a High Powered Expert Committee in March 2011. The Committee was chaired by noted Economist Dr Isher Ahluwalia.
