Centre calls for evolving strategies to manage ground water resources

The Centre has called for evolving strategies to manage ground water resources in a rational and sustainable manner. Addressing a seminar on National Project on Aquifer Management in New Delhi today, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, G. Mohan Kumar said that management of aquifers is essential to manage the recessing water resources across the country.

Mr Kumar assured the state governments and stakeholders of full financial assistance for the maintenance of aquifers. He also appealed to the people to avoid over-exploitation of water.

Speaking on the occasion, Planning Commission Member Mihir Shah said that depleting water level is a major cause of concern and cautioned the people of its growing health hazards.

AIR correspondent adds, in a major shift in the water sector, the 12th Five Year Plan calls for more holistic aquifer management strategies which include separation of electricity feeders for agriculture and domestic use to break the cycle of free use of electricity and excess use of groundwater. It also focusses on rationalising the pricing of water for various categories of users, including domestic users.
