The government has conveyed an all party meet today on the proposed anti rape bill which seeks to hand down stringent punishment for crimes against women, including rape and acid attack. It also seeks to lower the age of consent for sex to 16 from 18.
While, the main opposition party BJP maintains that it will present its views in the all-party meeting after intra-party confabulations, Bahujan Samaj Party, outside supporter of the UPA,has supported the bill.
Though the outcome of today's all-party meeting will determine the fate of its bill, the government is racing against time and it has merely four working days to get the criminal laws (amendment) bill passed in both Houses of parliament, failing which anti-rape ordinance will cease to be a law.
