Centre assures J&K Government of full support in its efforts to put an end to violence in the state; CM appeals for calm

The Centre has assured the J&K Government of full support in its efforts to put an end to violations of curfew, stone pelting and rioting. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that there are reliable reports about anti-national elements trying to exploit the situation. He said some militants may also have sneaked into the valley to trigger violence. Mr. Chidambaram appealed to all those who believe in peace and development to stand by the state Government and help it restore law and order. He said the CRPF which has been deployed in the state to assist the state police, has been instructed to observe maximum restraint while dealing with rioters and stone pelters.<br/>Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had appealed for calm in the trouble torn state.<br/>Talking to reporters in Srinagar Mr Omar Abdullah said it is extremely unfortunate that vulnerable youth are being incited and brought to forefront resulting in tragic incidents.<br/>Mr. Abdullah sent a tough message declaring that wherever curfew has been imposed it will be enforced strictly.<br/>Meanwhile, three more persons died in police firing on Tuesday in South Kashmir town of Anantnag. The incident occurred when Police and Paramilitary forces were chasing a group of protesters in curfew areas. AIR correspondent reports that six persons were injured in the incident and two of them succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.
