The Centre has asked the State Bank of India to reconsider it's decision to impose a penalty on non-maintenance of minimum balance in accounts from 1st April onwards. According to sources, the Government has also urged various banks, including private banks to reconsider the charges on cash transactions and ATM withdrawals above a certain limit.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Congress terms SBI decision to levy charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance as anti-poor <br/><br/>Congress has termed State Bank's decision to levy charges for not maintaining minimum monthly balance in saving bank accounts, as anti-poor and anti-middle class. <br/><br/>Briefing media in New Delhi today, party spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said, the decision will hurt the the poor badly. Mr Kumar alleged the present government is making all efforts to hurt the hardworking middle class and poor people. <br/><br/>After a gap of five years, State Bank of India had decided to reintroduce penalty on non-maintenance of minimum balance in accounts from 1st of next month. The Bank also revised charges on other services, including ATMs. <br/><br/>Country's largest bank will permit savings bank account holders to deposit cash three times a month free of charges and levy 50 rupees plus service tax on every transaction beyond that.
