Union Environment Ministry has asked Orissa government to issue show cause notice to Jindal Steel Plant at Angul for violating Forest Conservation Act 1980. In a letter to the state government, the Environment Ministry said, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd started construction activity on the non-forest land without obtaining prior clearance under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, which is not in consonance with the environmental clearance accorded to the project. The Ministry also directed the state government to inform it soon about the action taken. Two months ago, Environment Ministry had cleared Jindal's 6 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant and 1,000 MW Captive Power Plant at Kerjang in Angul, with certain conditions.
