Centre asks industrialists to invest in N-E region

The Centre has assured to removing the existing blocks and bottlenecks for accelerated development of the North-Eastern region.This was stated by the Union Cabinet Secretary, Mr. K.M.Chandrasekhar while reviewing the progress of major infrastructure projects under implementation in the eight states of the region, including Sikkim, at a function in Guwahati yesterday. The Chief Secretaries and top bureaucrats in the central ministries were present in the close-door review meeting.The Cabinet Secretary exhorted the industry to come forward in a greater way to achieve the targeted growth in the region.Highlighting frequent disruptions in movement of essential commodities in recent months, he asked the concerned implementing agencies to ensure time-bound completion of major roads and railway infrastructure projects for better connectivity while maintaining the fragile ecology in the region. It has been emphasized on enhancing storage facilities both for food grains and petroleum products to meet any eventuality.Mr. Chandrasekhar asked the concerned states to set up committees headed by the Chief Secretaries to ensure compliance of timeliness while implementing the projects. These committees will review progress of the projects in every two months and co-ordinate with the Centre.The Cabinet Secretary mentioned that the request of some of the states on border areas development will be considered aiming at opening up trade with South East Asian countries, particularly Bangladesh and Myanmar.
