The centre said the Delhi Lt Governor has been advised to decide by month-end the CBI request for prosecution in four 1984 riot cases cases. Replying to calling attention in Rajya Sabha on the issue, the Home Minister Mr P Chidambaram said that the CBI has completed investigation or re-investigation of seven cases against politicians.He said that the case against Dharamdas Shastri has been closed and the case against Jagdish Tytler who was chargesheeted has been pending before the court. Asserting that there was no interference in these cases, Chidambaram said his only advice was to proceed on an impartial, fearless and speedy inquiry.He said that it is most unsatisfactory that no police personnel was convicted for dereliction of duty. Mr Chidambaram said that he will attempt to see how the cases against police personnel guilty of grave dereliction of duty are opened and action initiated against them. The Home Minister said that every attempt is being made to make up for the inaction in the past years in the 1984 riot cases. Apologising to the Sikh community for the loss suffered by them, he said that the government will do its best to heal their wounds. Admitting that there has been a delay in distributing compensation to the families of the victims, Mr Chidambaram assured the members that there will be no delay. Listing the compensation paid so far, the home minister said over 462 crore have been disbursed out of 714.76 crore rupees . He said that over 26 hundred cases are pending and he is writing to the chief ministers to expedite the payment of compensation. On the request for jobs, he said over 1115 requests have been received by the Delhi government and he said he will ensure that the process to give jobs to those eligible is completed as fast as possible Dissatisfied with the reply of the home minister, BJP and Akali members staged a walkout.
