The Centre has asked banks, financial institutions and the real estate sector to work alongwith the government to realise the ambition of making India Slum Free. Addressing a function in New Delhi to mark the World Habitat Day 2010, the Housing and Urban poverty Alleviation Minister, Kumari Selja regretted that fact about the financial exclusion of urban poor from the formal system because these institutions are reluctant to lend credit to lower income segments. She said the private players are participating in higher income housing in a big way but not the poor income segments. Stressing the need for enhancing the credit through appropriate fiscal and institutional mechanism to ensure flow of capital to realise the vision of Slum Free India, Ms. Selja said that there is a need to change the outlook of the financial institutions towards the low income groups. She said that the housing deficit cannot be addressed simply by budgetary support or government programmes.
