In Assam, the Centre has approved setting up of eleven Integrated Infrastructure Development (IID) projects for promotion of small-scale industries and rural economy in the State. These centres are identified for setting up in the industrially-backward areas of Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Darrang, Cachar, Dhemaji, Sivsagar, Tinsukia and Kokrajhar districts. According to official sources at Guwahati, two more Integrated Infrastructure Development centres are in active consideration for sanction in the State by the High Powered Committee constituted by the Central Government for the purpose. The IID centres will provide infrastructural needs to promote stronger linkages between agriculture and industry besides generating rural employment in those areas not covered by the Industrial Growth Centre project. Each IID centre will cost around five crore rupees, of which, four crores will be provided by the Centre. 40 to 450 small and tiny units are expected to be accommodated in each of the IID centres.Infrastructure facilities like power distribution, water, telecommunication, drainage, pollution control, road, bank, raw material depot, storage, marketing and technological back up services- are to be provided to the entrepreneurs within the project area. AIR Correspondent reports that three Centrally-sponsored Industrial Growth Centres are also coming up in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Kamrup districts of the State at a cost of about 65 crore rupees.
