The Centre has approved the National Quantum Mission to accelerate Quantum Technology led economic growth and leverage India into a leading nation in the sector. A decision in this regard was taken at a Union Cabinet meeting in New Delhi today. The aim of the mission is to seed, nurture and scale up scientific and industrial Research and Development and create a vibrant and innovative ecosystem in Quantum Technology. The new mission targets developing intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50 to 1000 physical qubits in 8 years in various platforms like superconducting and photonic technology.
''
'' The mission will help develop magnetometers with high sensitivity in atomic systems and Atomic Clocks for precision timing, communications and navigation. It will also support design and synthesis of quantum materials such as superconductors, novel semiconductor structures and topological materials for fabrication of quantum devices. The Mission will be implemented by the Department of Science and Technology in partnership with other departments.
''
''Addressing media after the meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that the Quantum Mission has been approved at a total cost of over 6,000 crore rupees for a period from 2023-24 to 2030-31. He said, the decision will take the country to new heights.
''
''Elaborating more on the National Quantum Mission, Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the mission will give India a quantum jump in the world arena. He added that there are at present six countries including USA, Canada and France which are having quantum technology.
''
''The Mission would greatly benefit communication, health, financial and energy sectors as well as drug design, and space applications.
