The government today approved a 20 per cent disinvestment in Steel Authority of India to fetch a total of 16,000 crore rupees. The Home Minister Mr. P Chidambaram told to reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the disinvestment, the government's equity will fall to 69 per cent from 85.82 per cent currently.Mr Chidambaram said, the government today banned Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in cigarette manufacturing.Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved a proposal for digitalisation of transmitters of All India Radio and Doordarshan. Briefing reporters, infromation and broadcasting minister, Mrs Ambika Soni said that it will be completed at an estimated cost of 1540 crore rupees. She said this is an eleventh plan period scheme and involves replacement of medium wave transmitter by power digital trasmitters.It also approved a proposal to introduce a bill in Parliament for the prevention of torture. Mrs Ambika Soni said this is a step towards ratification of UN convention against torture.
