Undetered by the attack on Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Qureshi, both the centre and the Hurriyat Conference on Saturday reaffirmed their commitment to the dialogue process to address issues in Jammu and Kashmir. The Home Minister Mr. P.Chidambaram voiced the Government's commitment to quiet talks with every shade of political opinion in the state to find a solution. Condemning the attack, he said that the right response at this hour will be not to be cowed down by these violent acts or allow fear to interrupt the process of quiet diplomacy. In a statement, Mr. Chidambaram termed the attack on Mr. Qureshi as a cowardly attempt by those who do not wish that the problems of Jammu and Kashmir should be resolved in a peaceful manner. He said, he is deeply distressed by the attack and hoped that Mr. Qureshi, who is battling for his life in a hospital, will recover. Mr. Chidambaram welcomed the statement of Mirwaiz and others who have vowed to continue their efforts to find a peaceful solution through talks with the Centre.Taking a defiant stand, Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said the amalgam will not be cowed down by acts like attack on Fazl Quereshi and will pursue the path of dialogue for resolving the Kashmir problem. He said the Hurriyat believes in dialogue with India and Pakistan to reach the goal of resolving the matterThe condition of Fazal Haq Qureshi, who was shot at by militants of Al-Nasreen outfit outside a mosque in Sri Nagar continued to be critical today. Doctors attending on him at the Soura Medical Institute said Qureshi's condition is critical as he has suffered significant brain damage. Qureshi, who heads the Peoples Political Front, was fired upon from point blank range by militants on Friday evening while he was returning home after offering prayers. The 65-year-old moderate face of the separatist outfit is known for his simple ways and traveled in a bus declining police security. Al-Nasreen militant outfit, believed to be a front of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying he was playing a key role in the talks with the Centre.
