Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today said the government has accorded top priority to ensure road safety on National highways.<br/><br/>Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha on first day of second phase of Budget session, Mr Gadkari said, the government has taken effective steps to check accidents on the Highways. He expressed concern that as many as 1.5 lakh people die every year in 5 lakh road accidents in the country which is very unfortunate.<br/><br/>He said, his Ministry is ready to provide foot over bridge or underpasses along the Highways wherever required to ensure safety of people.<br/><br/>He also informed the House that work on 261 projects relating to four laning of over 14 thousand kilometres roads are currently underway and are likely to be completed by May,2019. He said, the projects will cost over 1.83 lakh crore rupees. Mr Gadkari also said, the toll tax to the tune of 43,721 crore rupees was collected on Highways in the country in the last three years.
