Centrally supported package for revival & sustainable development of agriculture & fisheries launched in Kuttanad

In Kerala, a special centrally-supported package for revival and sustainable development of agriculture and fisheries in Kuttanad wetland was launched today. Inaugurating the works of the first of 1840-crore rupees package at Monkompu in Kuttanad, Union Water Resources Minister P K Bansal said, the Centre would provide all supports to viable proposals submitted by the state for revival of the Kuttanad eco system, known as the 'granary of Kerala.' He said, allocation of funds would not be a problem if viable proposals are submitted in time.Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan urged the Centre to provide funds for giving interest-free credit to farmers, especially paddy-growers. He also urged the Centre to announce the special agricultural package for high range Idukki district, the home of cash crops. The first phase of the package mostly comprised water- management works like strengthening of bunds and clearing the intricate network of canals criss-crossing the wetlands, which is crucial for restoration of paddy cultivation and inland fisheries in an eco-friendly and sustainable model. The project was worked out by in-depth studies done by the M S Swaminathan Foundation, taking into account the unique ecological features of the area. Kuttanad covers a sprawling wetland region, most of which is in Alappuzha district, and its rims touching Kottayam and Pathanamthitta.
