Central team visits cyclone hit Cuddalore

The nine member central team under the leadership of Mr. Lokesh Jha, visited the devastated areas of Cuddalore hit by cyclonic storm, Thane today.The team constituted by the Home Ministry visited Kumarapuram, Karamanikuppam, Valpakkam and Vazhapattu which suffered the maximum damage.They assessed several acres of irrigational lands and properties which were destroyed by the cyclone. The team members also met the victims of the cyclone hit areas of the Cuddalore district.The team will depart from Cuddalore this evening and will assess the damages at Villupuram, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur,Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur in two groups tomorrow.Earlier, the central team had met the State Chief Secretary Mr. Debendranath Sarangi and had a discussion with him on the situation.During the meeting, the State Government sought nearly Rs 5,520 crore from the Centre for restoration works in areas battered by the cyclonic storm. Around Rs 1210 crore has been sought for immediate restoration works and the rest for permanent restoration.Of the total 250 government schools in Cuddalore district, 190 have been affected by the cyclone with trees in the campus uprooted and plastic water tanks blown off. There is no power supply yet but the Education department has directed all schools to reopen today.The preliminary estimate of losses suffered by the schools has been put at 2.5 crore rupees. The department would issue textbooks and notebooks for those who have suffered losses due to the cyclone.
