Central team visits cyclone-hit areas of Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, the Central team visited several areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts today to gauge the extent of damages due to Cyclone Vardah. The nine-member inter-ministerial team arrived in Chennai last night. They called on Tamil Nadu chief minister O.Panneerselvam at the Secretariat this morning. <br/><br/>They were also briefed by officials of the state government about the nature of devastations due to the cyclone that crossed the shores close to the city on 12th of this month. Later, the team members set out on inspecting the affected locations including Panagal Park, Anna Nagar Arch and Thirumangalam in Chennai in the forenoon. They split into two groups post lunch and covered Vandalur in Kanchipuram and Pulicat Lake, Ponneri and Sholavaram in Tiruvallur districts.<br/><br/>Before winding up their two day inspections tomorrow, the team is scheduled to meet the state chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan. The team has assured the chief minister, it would finalise its report at the earliest after an in-depth study and submit it to the Union Home Ministry. <br/><br/>Tamil Nadu Government has put the value of total damages due to the cyclone at 22573 crore rupees and has sought an 'on account' release of 1000 crore rupees from the Centre for undertaking immediate restoration works.
