In Assam, a Central team has been assessing the loss that the State had to suffer due to the drought-like situation this year. The Central team comprising ten members arrived in Guwahati on Monday had discussions with the State Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, Revenue. The team has divided into smaller groups and left for various districts of the state for field verification on Tuesday. The Centre will finalize the size of the compensation package for Assam based on the report to be submitted by this Central team that will be in the State for three days.Earlier, the State Government had submitted a compensation proposal of 750-crore rupees to the Centre to tackle the drought-like situation in the State. The package sought included 610 crore for agricultural loss and 131 crore for irrigation loss. The Central team led by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Mukesh Khullar has representatives from the Rural Development and Finance Ministry besides Planning Commission and the Central Water Commission. Before returning to New Delhi, the team will again meet the State Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretary of Revenue.
