Central team to visit Tamil Nadu to assess flood damage

A nine-member central team will today begin its on-the-spot assessment of the damages caused in Tamil Nadu due to recent rain and floods in the state. The inter-ministerial team, headed by Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary TVSN Prasad, has been deputed on the directions of the Prime Minister following a request by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.<br/>The team will conduct inspections for two days in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore districts and submit their report to the Union Home Ministry.<br/><br/>The state Government, in its memorandum to the Centre, had on Monday said that the total damages has been worked out to be around Rs 8,500 crore. A Rs 940-crore package has been released by the National Disaster Relief Fund for the rehabilitation work. Of the nine member high-level inter-ministerial team headed by Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary TVSN Prasad, four members from Delhi and one from Bengaluru have reached the city and one more member is scheduled to arrive in a few hours. Two more representatives are stationed in Chennai itself. After their discussions with the state Revenue Department Principal Secretary Atulya Mishra and senior officials, they are scheduled to proceed on to their first hand assessment of the flood damages by splitting into different groups. Their consolidated report would help decide on the next course of action to help the state.

The team will hold preliminary discussions with the state government officials today and then proceed to the affected regions of Chennai and the districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore to assess the damages.<br/>A Rs 940-crore package has already been released by the National Disaster Relief Fund for the rehabilitation work.<br/>Our correspondent reports that rain has subsided in the state, though the MeT Department has predicted isolated heavy rain along the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for three days from Friday.

Central team to visit Tamil Nadu to assess flood damage

In Tamil Nadu, the nine-member central team headed by Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary TVSN Prasad will begin its assessment of damages due to the flood for two days from tomorrow. <br/><br/>The high-level team is represented by officials from the Ministries of Agriculture, Finance, Rural Development, Drinking Water and Power, Road Transport and Highways and Health and the Central Water Commission. <br/><br/>The team has been deputed on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a request from the state Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. A financial package of Rs 940 crore has also been released from the National Disaster Relief Fund for sustaining the rehabilitation works. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, rain has subsided in the state since yesterday, though the Meteorology Department has predicted isolated heavy rain along the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for three days from Friday.<br/><br/>The central inter-ministerial team will hold preliminary discussions with the state government officials in Chennai tomorrow and then proceed on to the affected regions of the city and the districts of Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore by splitting into different groups to assess the damages for two days, as informed by the state government sources to AIR. <br/><br/>The chairman of the team Mr Prasad reaches Chennai tonight and other four members from Delhi will arrive tomorrow morning, who will be joined by the Central Water Commission representative from Bengaluru and the Highways and Health Ministries from Chennai for the inspection. They are expected to submit their report to the Union Home Ministry within a few days. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, huge amount of excess water from various reservoirs from across the state continues to be discharged, triggering alerts for people living near river banks.

Central team to visit Tamil Nadu to assess flood damage

A high-level inter-ministerial central team will visit Tamil Nadu from tomorrow to assess the damage caused by the recent floods in Chennai and neighbouring districts which were worst affected.<br/><br/>Over 120 people lost their lives in Tamil Nadu in last fortnight following floods due to incessant rains which lashed Chennai and some other parts of the state. The team, led by Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs TVSN Prasad, has been deputed for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.<br/><br/>The team has been deputed following a request from the Tamil Nadu government to Prime Minister.
