An inter-ministerial central team will visit drought affected districts of Karnataka on Sunday to reassess the loss and damages. Replying to a calling attention by M Venkaiah Naidu and others on drought condition in Karnataka, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat gave this information. He said a central team also visited the state in December last. Mr Rawat said the state government is primarily responsible for taking necessary relief measures in the wake of natural calamities including drought. He said there is availability of funds with the state government under State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for relief measures. The Minister said the central team which visited the state last year had recommended over 296 crore rupees for the drought hit state . The centre had approved over 186 crore rupees out of which 70 crore rupees was released and 116 crore rupees was adjusted from the state’s SDRF balance.Expressing concern over the issue, the Minister assured the House that government will take all possible measures to protect the interest of farmers. Dissatisfied over the reply, the Opposition BJP staged a walkout.
