Central team meets TN CM, visits flood hit areas for final assessment

A central team today visited many locations in Chennai, battered due to recent floods. The high level inter-ministerial team took a view of the caved in road in Mylapore and also Kotturpuram and Saidapet areas that were heavily inundated during flood. The team also had a glimpse of the damages to infrastructures like roads and pipelines in Valasaravaakkam and Jafferkhanpet. <br/><br/>Earlier, Tamil Nadu chief minister J.Jayalalithaa briefed them about the extent of damages in the state. She also reminded them about the financial aid sought from the Centre to restore the damaged infrastructure. The total damage due to flood has been put at Rs 25,912 crore by the state in its supplementary memorandum submitted last month. <br/><br/>The visit of the central team that inspected in November last week has been appreciative of the relief works undertaken in the rain-devastated areas. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has impressed upon them to make an in-depth assessment and submit its report at the earliest to the Centre. The team leader TVSN Prasad while responding to the press at the secretariat was affirmative saying its consolidated report would be given to the Union Home Ministry as soon as possible. The team will be winding up its inspections by visiting the neighbouring Tiruvallur district tomorrow.

Central team meets TN CM, visits flood hit areas for final assessment

The central team headed by Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary TVSN Prasad met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa in the state secretariat in Chennai this morning. They are scheduled to visit the worst affected areas of the city and other districts for two days from this afternoon. A release from the state government says the central team lauded the state administration for preventing any spread of epidemic during the floods during its meeting with the Chief Minister. <br/><br/>The same inter-ministerial team inspected the flood damages during the first spell of heavy downpour in the state in the last week of November. Still heavier spells occurred in the first week of December and the state administration gave a demand seeking a total of Rs 25,912.45 crore as flood aid. <br/><br/>In this backdrop, the team members are scheduled to visit many places in Chennai this afternoon and other districts tomorrow for a final assessment of the damages. After the Chief Minister's interaction, chief secretary Gnanadesikan and senior officials explained the trail of devastations to the central team.
