Central Bank's Treasury Bond issue: Sri Lankan President announces appointment of commission to investigate, recommend actions

Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena today announced appointment of a commission to investigate and recommend actions for the Central Bank's controversial Treasury Bond issue. He had earlier said that the investigation should be free from political interference, and it will be directed for an independent and impartial judicial process.

The parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises, COPE, has already recommended legal action against the former governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran, who was accused of insider trading.

Mr. Mahedaran is considered close to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and is still working with his office. The President's move is also a reflection of the growing schism between the two main political parties in Sri Lanka who have come together to form a national unity government.

The announcement came a day before parliament is to debate the COPE report. While parliament has no powers to instigate prosecutions, the presidential commission could set the stage for criminal charges.
