Central agencies procure 230 lakh tonnes wheat so far

Central agencies have procured 230 lakh tonnes wheat during the current marketing season so far. As on 1st of April this year, over 145 lakh tonnes wheat stocks was available in the central pool. With this the total wheat stock on 1st of this month in Central pool was 326.38 lakh tonnes, whereas the annual requirement under National Food Security Act is around 240 lakh tonne. Food and Consumer affairs Ministry said, the wheat stocks position in the country is comfortable. <br/><br/>Food Corporation of India, FCI maintains adequate stock of food grains to deal with fluctuations in productions and to meet unforeseen natural calamities. The FCI also releases wheat at pre-determined prices in the open market from time to time to enhance the supply of wheat especially during the lean season, to moderate the open market prices. The average sale under Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) has been around 50-55 Lakh tonne. In the current year, private traders have procured wheat estimated to be 60 to 65 Lakh tonne and therefore demand under OMSS is expected to be lower.
