Center will put mechanism to monitor no effluents released in Ganga river

The Center today said that it would put in place a mechanism to monitor steps to ensure that no effluents are released in the Ganga river. Inaugurating the third phase of river rafting expedition by Indo-Tibetan Border Police Environment Minister Jyanti Natrajan said that government is committed to pollution free environment and clean waters in the rivers of India.

She said National Ganga River Basin Authority, NGRVA under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, will ensure that by 2020 with the collective efforts of Center and State Governments, no untreated Municipal sewage or industrial effluents will flow into the river Ganga.

The Minister said that the government has taken number of steps for enhancing community mobilisation in creating awareness among the public about the cleaning of Ganga and 7000 crore rupees has been sanctioned for various projects in this connection.

Smt. Natarajan also announced that in view of Maha Kumbh Mela her ministry will be launching a pre Kumbh campaign to create public awareness on the pollution in the rive Ganga. She also facilitated the members of ITBP conducting six phase Ganga Punardarshan rafting expedition.

She also flagged of fourth phase of expedition from Allahabad to Patna. The expedition will be concluded at Ganga Sagar. It was started on April 23 from Gangotri.
