Government is working on a new legislation to replace the existing Disabilities Act. The new legislation will align the present Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 with UN Convention on the Rights of persons with Disabilities, UNCRPD. This was revealed by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik today while inaugurating a seminar on Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New Delhi. Accepting that the current act falls short of UNCRPD provisions, he said that the high level committee working on new legislation will submit its recommendation by March end. Stating that people with disabilities contribute to nation's prosperity, Mr Wasnik added that the Government is committed to provide social safety nets, education, health services and gainful employment to these people.
