Census will help Govt. plan development work: PM

The Prime Minister says, census will help the Government plan its development work. Dr.Manmohan Singh, who was enumerated in the capital today, termed the census data as a treasure house of information. <br/><br/>Apealing to all citizens to participate the 15th National Census, he said they should ensure participation of every person in the exercise. He said the Census of India is the most massive operation for compiling statistics anywhere in the world. Some of this data forms an important base for planning the level of economic and social activities.<br/><br/>The biggest Census exercise ever to be attempted in human history will cover India's 1.2 billion population. It was launched on last Thursday with President Pratibha Patil being the first to be enumerated in the decennial exercise.<br/><br/>Over 25 lakh officials have been deployed to capture the socio-economic-cultural profile of the country's citizens. They will gather information for the creation of the National Population Register.<br/><br/>Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has urged the Prime Minister to include Transgenders and pavement dwellers in the census, now under way. In a letter to Dr Manmohan Singh, he pointed out to the sizeable section of transgenders living in the country and said there is need to make necessary provisions in the enumeration format to include them in the Census. The Chief Minister said pavement dwellers are usually left out of the census exercise. He requested the Prime Minister to bring them also within the ambit of enumeration.
