Celebrations herald birth of Telangana as 29th state; TRS Chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao sworn-in as 1st CM

A separate Telangana state has come into existence as the 29th state of the Indian Union. The decades-old dream of the people of Telangana was fulfilled at the stroke of midnight last night. President's rule imposed in united Andhra Pradesh has been revoked partially to facilitate the swearing-in of the TRS government in the newly-created state of Telangana. TRS President K. Chandrasekhara Rao is being sworn-in as the first Chief Minister of Telangana. About 15 Ministers will also be taking oath along with him. Elaborate arrangements have been made at the lawns of the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad for the ceremony. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan was sworn-in as the Governor of Telangana a short while ago. He will be the Governor for both Telangana and the residual Andhra Pradesh. After the swearing in ceremony, Chandrasekhara Rao will address the people of Telangana from the historic Parade Grounds and kick-start the week-long official celebrations.

People began celebrating the formation of Telangana state last evening with dazzling display of fireworks and by distributing sweets in Hyderabad and other parts of the newly formed state. Our correspondent reports that slogans and songs in praise of the sacrifices made by the unsung heroes of Telangana echoed the entire region.

In residual Andhra Pradesh, President's rule will continue until TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu takes charge as Chief Minister, which is likely on June the 8th.
