CEC expresses satisfaction over record voter turnout in recently concluded Assembly polls

The Chief Election Commissioner of India S Y Quraishi today expressed satisfaction over the record voter turnout in the recently concluded Assembly elections in the five states. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Quraishi said incident free elections were held in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala with the commendable efforts of over one lakh fifty thousand polling personnel and over six lakh fifty thousand security personnel.The chief election commissioner said there were fewer model code violations this time. Mr. Quraishi said eight thousand eight hundred twenty overseas voters also cast their votes. Mr. Quraishi said, measures like Expenditure Monitoring Division set up during the Elections proved to be a success to keep a check on money spent on election campaigns. He said over 72 crore rupees cash seized including 60 crore 10 lakh rupees from Tamil Nadu only. He said All India Radio's contribution is enormous to create awareness among people to participate in the election process.The chief election commissioner said elaborate arrangements have been made for the counting of votes on Friday. Mr. Quraishi said votes will be counted in 839 counting centres. He said, the results are expected by noon on the counting day. An elaborate three tier security arrangement has been put in place for the exercise, which would start at 8 AM involving 43,982 officials and nearly 17,700 central security personnel keeping a hawk eyed vigil. Quraishi said that counting would take place in 142 counting halls in Assam, 140 in Kerala, 11 in Puducherry, 234 in Tamil Nadu and 312 in West Bengal.
