The Chief Election Commissioner Mr. V.S. Sampath has said electoral reforms will be pursued relentlessly with emphasis being on decriminalization of politics. In an exclusive interview to AIR, Mr. Sampath said comprehensive reforms in the electoral process will involve bringing amendments to the constitution and existing legislations including changes in the Representation of the People’s Act, 1951.
He said there is a general perception among the people that those facing serious criminal charges contest in elections and become legislators due to the delay in the dispensation of justice. He said corrective steps will be taken to cleanse the system.
