The Cabinet Committee on Security met last night and took stock of situation in Kashmir valley. The meeting was presided over by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. This was the second time in less than a month that the CCS is discussing the situation. Views of the political parties and security agencies are believed to be have been discussed besides the proposal of state Chief Minister Omar Abduallah for beginning an internal dialogue with all shades of opinion. Official sources said after the meeting that Mr. Omar Abdullah will meet the Prime Minister today for discussions on the political and administrative steps that are needed to defuse the escalating situation. In a broadcast on DD Kasheer, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for peace and also vowed not to allow perpetrators of violence to win. Asking people to cooperate with him to help restore calm in the state, Mr. Omar Abdullah said, he is willing to take 10 steps forward and appealed to them to take at least one step and help create a situation conducive to end the cycle of violence. Meanwhile, eight persons including a woman were killed in separate incidents with five of them perishing in a blast after explosives went off in a police station. Police sources said, four civilians died on the spot and 25 injured when a mob set afire a police station, where explosives and a LPG cylinder were kept, triggering a massive blast in Khrew area on outskirts of Srinagar city. A fifth person succumbed to injuries late in the night while another was in a very critical condition. Security forces had to open fire when angry protesters attacked a police post. A woman died in the incident while twelve got injured. Curfew continues in several trouble hit towns of the valley. The situation is tense and protesters have blocked Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at several places.
