The Cabinet Committee on Security today took stock of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh came in the wake of the deployment of army in the violence hit Kashmir valley. <br/><br/>The decision to deploy army to assist authorities in restoring law and order in the valley was at the request of the state government. <br/><br/>According to sources, the CCS decided that the army would be used as a deterrent. The CCS agreed that the police and security forces should ensure that there is no violation of curfew and it should be strictly enforced. <br/><br/>It was also decided that the army should be used in peripheral areas and not in the congested ones. The Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram, the Defence Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, National Security Advisor, Shiv Shankar Menon, Home Secretary, Mr. G.K. Pillai and Defence Secretary, Pradeep Kumar attended the meeting. <br/><br/>Mr. G.K. Pillai, later flew to Srinagar to assess the situation on the ground. Earlier, the Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Pallam Raju said that army will remain in Srinagar till it is necessary. He, however, said the government would recall the army as soon as the situation improves.<br/><br/><br/>The Congress while expressing concern over the situation in Jammu & Kashmir said that the elements across the border are trying to create tension and violence in the valley. <br/><br/>The party spokesperson, Mrs. Jayanti Natarajan said that they are confident that the people in Kashmir will not fall prey to the designs of forces which are against the country. She called upon the political parties in the state to co-operate with the government in restoring peace in the valley.
