CCPA approves creation of new Gorkhaland Territorial Administration

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) on Monday approved creation of a new Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, GTA in West Bengal. GTA, an independent autonomous authority will replace the existing Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh chaired the meeting of CCPA Monday morning which took this decision. The tripartite agreement will be signed later in the day in the presence of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamta Banerjee and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha President Bimal Gurung at Sukhna in Darjeeling district. The Opposition Left Front has decided to boycott the function. AIR Correspondent reports, a long standing impasse in the Darjeeling hills is heading towards a resolution when the Centre, the West Bengal government and the Gurkha Janmukti Morcha will sign the tripartite agreement for the formation of the Gurkha Land territorial administration.This autonomous authority for the Darjeeling hills will replace the existing Darjeeling-Gurkha Hill Council. It is learnt that the Centre will provide a 600 crore rupees economic package to the proposed Gurkha Land Territorial Administration in Darjeeling for development work under each jurisdiction. The fund will be released by the Centre over 3 years, starting from 2011.Meanwhile, the Opposition Left Front has criticized the State government for inclusion of the word “Gurkha Land” in the name of the proposed authority which according to them, will pave the way for the creation of a separate state.Few organisations have also called 48 hours North Bengal Bandh from on Monday protesting the proposed agreement.
