CCI slaps penalty of Rs 1,773 cr on CIL

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has slapped a penalty of 1,773 crore rupees on Coal India Limited(CIL) for abuse of its dominant position. The Commission held that Coal India through its subsidiaries, operates independently of market forces and enjoys undisputed dominance in production and supply of non-coking coal in the country.

It also found that CIL and its subsidiaries contravening the provisions of Competition Act for imposing unfair and discriminatory conditions in Fuel Supply Agreements with the power producers for supply of non-coking coal.

The Commission passed the order yesterday on a batch of information filed by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited against Coal India and its subsidiaries.
