CCI imposes Rs 8-cr penalty on entities of Fast Way Group<br/>

The Competition Commission of India, CCI, has slapped a penalty of more than eight crore rupees on multi system operators group – Fast Way – for violating the provisions of the Competition Act, 2002.According an official release, CCI has found the group abusing its dominance in the cable television service in Punjab and Chandigarh in violation of the Act.The order was passed following investigation by the Director General of CCI after a complaint was made by a broadcaster of a news and current affairs television channel operating in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.The Commission held that the Fast Way Group is having more than 85 per cent of the total subscribers in Punjab and Chandigarh.Due to this, not only every broadcaster, including the complainant is dependent upon the network, consumers of cable television there also have huge dependency on the group.The contravening group has been directed to deposit the penalty amount within 90 days. The Commission has also directed the entities within the group to stop indulging in anti-competitive practices which effectively amount to denial of market access.
