The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure has approved the project on Development of Mega Container Terminal at Chennai Port. The project is being taken up on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis. It will be under Public Private Partnership mode with a concession period of 30 years at an estimated cost of over 3600 crore rupees. The project is expected to boost exports and imports in the region with savings in freight and ship cost to the shippers.
