CCEA gives nod to revised IT scheme

Taking the IT revolution forward, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its nod for the revised scheme of Information and communication technology, ICT for secondary and senior secondary schools. One lakh eight thousand schools across the country will be covered under the scheme to be implemented during the 11th plan period out of which 53 thousand schools are already covered under the earlier scheme of 2005-06. Ten lakh teachers will be enabled under the scheme to use ICT enabled tools for teaching. The schools will be provided with the required computer hardware, software and E-content for the purpose. Dependable power supply and Internet connectivity preferably broad band will be provided to the schools under the scheme. While the Centre will provide 75 per cent of the funds, the States will be contributing 25 per cent. However, in the north eastern including Sikkim, the sharing pattern will be 90 per cent by the Centre and the rest of the 10 per cent for the States. Briefing media, the Human Resource Development Minister Mr. Kapil Sabil said that the concentration of the scheme will be in educationally backward blocks and areas with special attention will be for SCs and STs, economically weaker sections , minorities and the disabled. He also said that the softwares will also be provided in regional languages. The Central government will allocate six thousand crore rupees for the scheme which is estimated to cost over sixty nine thousand crore rupees.
