The government today approved the nomination of National Cooperative Consumer Federation, NCCF, Central Warehousing Corporation and cooperatives as central agencies for procurement of oil seeds and pulses. A decision to this effect was taken in the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs presided over by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. An official release issued after the meeting says that these agencies will procure oil seeds and pulses in addition to National Agricultural Cooperative marketing Federation, NAFED, under price support scheme. The step has been taken as a part of the initiative to improve productivity of pulses and oil seeds in the country. Government has already launched National Food Security Mission, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna, accelerated pulses production programme, Integrated scheme for oil seeds and pulses to bring significant increase in their production. The official release says with more than one government agency allowed procurement operations, it will result in creating more competitive environment and better quality of service to farmers besides low cost to the government.
