Government has approved a proposal to open 107 Kendriya Vidyalayas which would cater to nearly 1,03,000 students in the country. These schools will be opened during the remaining period of the 11th Plan, taking the total number of Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country to 1,088. The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs, CCEA yesterday gave the go-ahead to the proposal which would cost of 806 crore rupees. Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the CCEA meeting that the financial requirement for construction and operation of these schools is about 527 crore rupees in the 11th Plan with a spill over of over 279 crores towards the capital cost in the 12th Plan. He said, the CCEA also approved the restructuring the existing 10-year-old village self-employment scheme on the recommendations of various committees to rectify shortcomings pointed out by studies.<br/>Under the new plan for the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), the scheme has been renamed as National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and it aims at reducing poverty through promotion of diversified and gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities. The budget requirement for the NRLM was pegged at 16,400 crore rupees for the last two years of the 11th Plan including the 2,984 crore rupees already allocated for the current financial year. <br/>He said the CCEA also approved award of exploration blocks under the 4th bid of Coal Bed Methane and one block under the 8th bid round of New Exploration Licensing Policy. Mr. Chidambram said approval was also granted for the revision of unit cost of school toilet being constructed under Total Sanitation Campaign. It has been raised from 20,000 to 35,000 Rupees. He said the CCEA also approved the increase in Anganwadi toilets from 5 to 8 thousand Rupees.<br/>
