CBI today took over the Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case from Gujarat police by re-registering FIR in its Mumbai office. This was confirmed by Mr.P.Kandaswamy- Inspector General of CBI- who is heading the investigating team. Tulsiram Prajapati was a key witness in the killings of Sohrabuddin Shaikh and his wife Kauserbi-allegedly by Gujarat police. Supreme Court had recently ordered that the probe into Prajapati's killing to be transferred to CBI, following a petition filed by his mother Narmada Bai. She alleged that her son was killed in a fake encounter by the Gujarat police as he was key witness in November 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. Prajapati, a close aide of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, an alleged gangster, was killed in an encounter near Chapri village in Banaskantha district of Gujarat on 28th December 2006.The court had also criticized the tardy investigation by the Gujarat police and regretted that State police took more than three-and-a-half years to file the charge sheet. Prajapati encounter was earlier probed by state CID which had registered FIR in Ambaji last year. Seven policemen including IPS officer Vipul Agarwal were arrested in this case.
